Exhibition: 14 – 30 Oct 2016, 8.30 am – 6 pm
Exhibition Hall, Museum of Ho Chi Minh City

From Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam:

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with Consulate – General of Japan in HCMC proudly present a travelling exhibition “Japanese Pottery: The Rising Generation from Traditional Japanese Kilns” from 14 to 30 October, 2016 at the Exhibition Hall of the Museum of Ho Chi Minh City (at No. 92 Le Thanh Ton, District 1, HCMC).

“Japanese Pottery – The Rising Generation from Traditional Japanese Kilns” introduces the works of a total of 35 artists active in seven major traditional kiln sites in Japan. They differ in orientation, including some who carry on long traditions of pottery production while pursuing ever-richer standards in their craft and others who seek to create individualistic works exploring new forms. All are promising artists who will be leaders of the next generation in the ceramic arts in Japan. The theme of the exhibition this time focuses on “vessels,” endeavoring to show how ceramic artists understand the function of vessels, the better to understand the present situation, and the future, of Japanese pottery.

American photographer Tewfic El-Sawy has published a photo book about the Hầu Đồng tradition of Vietnam after documenting it for more than two years.

Tewfic El-Sawy is a professional travel photographer from New York City who has spent the past two years documenting the ancient indigenous Vietnamese tradition of Hầu Đồng. It was his serendipitous attendance of a Hầu Đồng ceremony in northern Vietnam during a 2014 photo expedition that triggered his interest in documenting this form of indigenous worship and adopting it as a long-term personal photographic project.

In his words:

“Over the years, I photographed faith-based festivals, events, and rituals; some pertaining to esoteric cults and others that are ancillaries to major world religions. While all have their singular ‘brand’ of exoticism, I found the Đạo Mẫu (Mother Goddess) rituals and ceremonies were the only ones that mixed religiosity with fashion, that merged choreography with theatrics, that involved soothsaying and mediumship, and engaged audiences in a way I hadn’t seen before.

What a contrast to the dour and joyless rituals of the so-called monotheistic religions!”

As Viet Nam is seeking UNESCO recognition of Đạo Mẫu and its ritual – Hầu Đồng to be inscribed in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, Tewfic has published a large coffee-table format photo book entitled “Hầu Đồng: The Spirit Mediums of Viet Nam”.

The book comprises over 100 large color photographs and more than 60 pages of text, which explains the ancient religion of Đạo Mẫu, its rituals, its pantheon of deities, along with a narrative of the photographer’s own experiences documenting it in Vietnam over almost 2 years.

29 – 31 Jan 2016, 4 – 8 pm
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi

From Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi:

The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is transforming the ‘street’ through its open-air courtyard into a traditional Vietnamese market in anticipation of the Tet lunar new year.

The three-day Cho Que (country market in Vietnamese) anchors a multi-faceted approach to the annual observance, which also includes presentation of lucky red envelopes to guests on the first day of the new year, a dragon dance and a Vietnamese banquet par excellence at Spices Garden.

“While so much of Vietnam shuts down during the Tet New Year, we’re really going to open things up,” said Franck Lafourcade, the hotel’s general manager. “From the market, to the red envelopes, to the food, we aim to provide the most authentic Tet experience possible.”

At Cho Que, vendors will set up shop along the walkway bordering one side of the hotel’s inner sanctum. Dressed in traditional garb, vendors will sell food, handicrafts and colourful do paper paintings from Dong Ho village.

Winners receive vouchers for various dining experiences in the hotel.

Meanwhile, boughs of flowering, pink beach blossoms and potted shrubs of kumquats laden with orange fruit will grace the hotel lobby, heralding the holiday as decidedly as Christmas trees in the West.
